The Colosseum has always been the undisputed symbol of the city of Rome and the most visited monument in Italy. Despite its imposing tonnage and its unusual size, it took only 5 years to complete its construction. The end of the work was celebrated by the Roman people with 100 days of celebrations, including fights, games, human and animal sacrifices. The Flavian Amphitheater, which only during the Middle Ages took the name of 'Colosseum', also played a fundamental role in the construction of other important roman buildings. Suffice it to say that part of the marble of its façade was used to build St. Peter's Basilica and Palazzo Barberini. Fallen into abandonment, in fact, the Colosseum was long used as a source of building materials for other buildings. This was until 1700, when interest in the ancient vestiges of Rome resurfaced. Due to its stormy past, however, it is estimated that over time only a third of what was the original construction of the Amphitheater remained.
